The only thing to do with good advice is pass it on. It is never any use to oneself.
-- Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900)

I don’t know if it’s because he’s just craving sugar or if he’s seeing to many commercials on Cartoon Network, but Aren has been obsessed with Bubble Gum lately. He recently let MaryBeth go home on the condition that she buy him a package of Hubba Bubba Max. When he finally got it, he’d chew on it until the flavor was all gone, and then very neatly put it back into its wrapper for disposal.

The thing is that because of the chemotherapy, he is particularly susceptible to mouth sores, and all that sugar in one fell swoop didn’t help matters much. After going through four pieces within about an hour, he finally stopped, complaining that his mouth hurt.
The next day, Aren asked MaryBeth for some more gum.

“Aren, are you sure you want to do that? It hurt your mouth yesterday.”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

Miss Jacalyn, Aren’s nurse chimed in, “Aren, I really don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Sure it is.”

“Okay, Aren, if you’re sure. Here you go.”

Aren kept the gum in his mouth for about two minutes before he looked at MaryBeth. “Mom, I don’t think I should eat any more bubble gum. It makes my mouth hurt.”

“I think that’s probably a good idea.”

A few minutes later, MaryBeth looked up from her book to see Aren looking down, shaking his head. “What’s wrong, Aren?”

Aren sheepishly responded, “I should have listened to Miss Jacalyn.”

Hindsight is, as they say, 20/20, even if you're five.
