11/01/05 09:33:39 - Reversal

The doctors have informed us that Aren will almost definitely leave the hospital tomorrow. We are all very excited, of course, and Aren is looking forward to it, as well. He’s been keeping his spirits up with all kinds of activity. Of course, his main activity is still Game Cube. He was playing Mario All-Star Baseball a few days ago, and MaryBeth had the nerve to actually win a game. We stopped letting Aren win several months ago, and he still wins most of the time. But every now and then, we’ll actually win a game. At first, he's usually mad that he lost, but we can usually calm him down by giving him a short lecture on sportsmanship.
This time seemed to be no different. Aren was quite upset. “I hate when you win!”

MaryBeth started into the standard spiel. “Aren, that's just the way life is. You can’t win all the time. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose.”

Aren took a few seconds and collected himself. “And sometimes it’s just a draw," he replied, nodding sagely.

MaryBeth looked at him for a few seconds before asking, “Aren, where did you hear that?” It’s always a slightly troubling question to ask, because you never know what the answer will be.

Aren just looked up at her and stated mater-of-factly, “It’s just the way life is, Mom.”

MaryBeth spent the rest of the day wondering what this might portend. I mean, how do you lecture a kid who just co-opts your speeches and turns them right back on you?
